Vargas Turbo Technologies (VTT) is proud to offer high-performance ignition coil upgrades for BMW N5X platforms, B58/S58/B48 engines, and select VAG applications.

Development & Testing

Our ignition coil program began with extensive outreach to multiple OEM and aftermarket coil manufacturers. We commissioned individual prototype coils, then subjected them to rigorous, repeatable testing in the United States to ensure they matched or exceeded factory performance standards.

Only the highest-performing designs were selected and produced to VTT’s exact specifications and colorways. These are not rebranded or cosmetic coils—each set is performance-validated.

Performance Benchmarks

Each VTT coil was tested directly against proven OEM or OEM-upgrade references:

• VTT N5X Coils
  Tested against Delphi 10571 coils (a well-known upgrade over factory N5X coils).
  Result: VTT coils match or exceed Delphi 10571 output.

• VTT B58 Coils
  Tested against factory Bosch B58 coils.
  Result: VTT coils match or exceed OEM Bosch performance.

• VTT VAG Coils
  Tested against factory Audi RS3 coils.
  Result: VTT coils significantly exceeded factory output, delivering substantially higher secondary spark energy.
  The test engineer described the VTT VAG coil as a “BEAST” compared to the OEM unit.

Fitment & Configuration

VTT ignition coils are available as complete sets for:

• BMW N54 / N55 / S55 (6-cylinder)

• BMW B58 / B48 / S58

• VAG platforms (4- or 5-cylinder configurations)

We also offer upgraded spark plugs, which are highly recommended when replacing ignition coils to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

Color Options

Available in Red, Black, or Blue.

These coils are not merely an aesthetic upgrade—each option is engineered to match or exceed factory secondary spark energy, making them suitable for both stock and high-performance applications.

Testing Methodology & Standards

All testing was performed using a controlled laboratory setup based on SAE 973-202011 standards, with a modification to improve measurement accuracy of secondary spark current.

Key Testing Details

• Supply Voltage: Regulated 14V with inline lead-acid battery for buffering

• Dwell Control: Waveform generator simulating 8,000 RPM

• Ignition Driver: ISL9V5036S3ST IGBT (same IGBT used in BMW MSD80 DMEs)

• Coil Type: “Dumb” coils (no internal igniters)

The ISL9V5036S3ST was specifically chosen to allow direct comparison of thermal behavior between VTT coils and stock BMW N54/N55 ignition coils.

Thermal Testing

• Conducted in free air at 67°F ambient

• No thermal compound or heatsinking applied

• Testing concluded at 160°F IGBT temperature or 260 seconds

• Temperatures sampled every 20 seconds

  • IGBT temperature measured via FLIR thermal imaging

  • Coil temperature measured using dual thermocouples

Important Note:
Test results cannot be directly compared to data generated by other test setups. As with engine dyno testing, accurate comparisons require identical equipment and procedures. Independent validation is welcomed.

Tuning Recommendations

To extract maximum performance from VTT ignition coils, minor tuning adjustments are required to optimize dwell time.

Optimal Dwell Settings

• VTT N5X: 3.4 ms

• VTT VAG: 3.8 ms

• VTT B58: 4.7 ms
