3 VTT™ Parts You Need to Support Your S55 Turbo Upgrade
Upgrading the turbo on your S55-powered M3 or M4 is one of the best ways to change how the car feels, but the turbo is only part of the story. If you want the setup to deliver power consistently and safely, the supporting hardware matters just as much.
At Vargas Turbocharger Technologies, we offer the parts that help complete your build, including upgrades that address known factory limitations and help your engine handle increased load, like our S55 engine crank hub upgrade. Here are three VTT™ components we recommend when you’re stepping up your S55 turbo system.
A Spline-Lock Crank Hub
The factory S55 crank hub can work just fine for a stock car, but once you start increasing horsepower, it can become a weak link. On N55 and S55 platforms, hub slip is a known issue, and it can even happen on stock vehicles when they’re driven hard with aggressive shifts.
That’s why we developed our spline lock crank hub solution. It’s designed to increase the mechanical security of the timing interface without requiring drilling, pinning, or welding. During development testing, the test rig failed before our spline lock hub did, which says a lot about the strength of the design.
For even more confidence, we recommend pairing the hub with our Crank Bolt Capture system. Together, they help reduce the risk of crank hub slip that can lead to timing issues and serious engine damage when you’re running more power.
Silicone Charge Pipes
Beyond the S55 crank hub fix, you have plenty of additional options. When you start pushing more airflow, the factory charge pipes can become a restriction. The stock pipes are noticeably flattened between the turbo and the intercooler, which creates a bottleneck right where you want smooth flow the most.
Our silicone charge pipes are designed to correct that. They provide a full 2-inch inner diameter from the turbo to the intercooler, which helps remove the restriction and lets the system move air more efficiently. The result is cleaner flow, better turbo efficiency, and a setup that’s built to support higher output without the factory compromises.
Performance Air Filters and a Velocity Stack
If you want more power, you need airflow, and the intake side is a great place to improve efficiency. Our performance air filters are built to increase airflow while still capturing contaminants so your turbo and engine stay protected.
To take it a step further, you can add a VTT™ velocity stack. It helps smooth and accelerate incoming air, reducing turbulence at the entry point. That improves how the turbo is fed and supports stronger overall efficiency, especially as airflow demands rise with a larger turbo and more aggressive tuning.
